71 Stunning Minimalist Website Designs for your Inspiration

In this article, I am going to share with you some of the most well-executed minimalist website designs online today. But before we jump into that, let’s quickly go over what minimalism is and how the ‘less-is-more’ approach can go hand-in-hand with web design if completed correctly.

Minimalism: A brief History

Minimalism was largely an American movement in New York in the last 1960s. The movement originated in the visual arts and music space and was characterised by extreme simplicity in a literal and objective sense.

A style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity

Since then, the word has evolved to mean various things to a lot of different people. This is due to the commonality of the underlying concept ‘less is more’ which can be applied to industries like music, fashion, art, lifestyle, and architecture. As well as being applied to all of these topics, it can also be applied to, you guessed it, web design.

What is Minimalist Website Design?

Although Minimalistic web design is known for its beautiful use of space. It is not uncommon for a web designer to fall into the trap of believing that a minimalistic design is purely aesthetic. It is easy to write only a few sentences per screenful, what is difficult is knowing what to include. Sometimes knowing what to exclude is just as important as what to include.

When it comes to a minimalist website design, one of the most well-known examples is Google. Minimalistic qualities are especially prevalent in Googe’s Search Engine interface. Google has made a point to prioritize simplicity since the late 1990s when they introduced the beta version of their search engine. It is clear to see that the page is based entirely around the search function. Practically everything apart from branding was avoided.

Don’t forget, just because minimalist website designs are popular right now doesn’t mean that they should be used all of the time, nor does it mean that they will increase profitability or aid in achieving business goals. In the list that we have compiled below, we show that these websites are very visually attractive due to a minimalist website design, but we don’t suggest they are profitable by any consequence.

Below, we’ve gathered a collection of our favourite minimalist website designs, in no particular order, to inspire you to do more by doing less.
